Tendencies of the decade in residential interior design: What goes and what stays?

We have not only just jumped between two difficult and challenging years. We are also entering a new decade and it is time to recap what the second decade of the two thousand left us and what awaits us during the third in terms of interior design and decoration.

But, before that, let's ask ourselves a question that we normally overlook - what exactly is a design trend? well, it is a change in our way of decorating and distributing spaces, furniture or even clothing that responds to certain social events, such as a change in mentality, an industrial or technological revolution, an abrupt change in the economy, the emergence of a new world power, an artistic movement, etc.

What were the events that determined the trends of the previous decade? Undoubtedly, the explosion of social networks, the adoption of new ways of communicating and living, the need for a better balance between personal life and work, as well as an economy that is characterized by being very volatile and uncertain .

Nueva llamada a la acción

During this new decade, we can expect that, as Pantone well determined when defining the colors of 2021, we will give priority to the need for stability, security and positivity. Work from home and health are also going to take on a lot of relevance, so we can expect interior design to be oriented towards spaces that project precisely that: calm, tranquility, optimism and healthy energy.

From industrial and nude to crude minimalism

During the previous decade, industrial design obtained a prominence similar to that which it enjoyed in the eighties and nineties in some emblematic neighborhoods of New York. Likewise, neutral or nude tones became favorites to create spaces that project elegance and serenity.

The new decade is going to rescue many elements of these trends, but the difference will be that now the emphasis will be on creating environments starting from very few monochromatic and luminous elements with some accents of color and textures. The most important thing is the raw or raw trend, that is, playing with the original colors of the finishes and fabrics and making a counterpoint in black, yellow or other vibrant details.

From futuristic materials to natural materials

In the past decade, we were all crazy about the smooth textures and rounded edges of our new tech gear, and that became a trend that we apply to design and furniture as well. However, the growing concern for the planet makes both interior designers and the general public increasingly choose materials that are friendly to nature both in their extraction and in their manufacture.

Hand in hand with the trend in crude oil, the use of recycled wood, plastics and minerals will undoubtedly be a priority in the design of this new decade.

From the modernist to the basics

Nostalgia is imposed in a time as turbulent and uncertain as the one we are living in, and it is not precisely a nostalgia for the colorful and motley design of previous decades, as we often see in the resurgence of retro or bohemian trends, but a much deeper longing. : we want to return to genuinely simpler times with fewer worries.

On the one hand, we have never had so much technology at home and home automation is becoming a fundamental part of our lives. On the other hand, we want clean and spacious spaces that evoke nature and take us away from the chaos of the city. Interior designers who find a balance between these two poles will undoubtedly be the ones who offer the best proposals to their clients.
